New telecom proclamation in the makingThe state-owned telecom monopoly, Ethio Telecom, on Thursday announced that more than 300 illegal telecom operators are providing telecom services by intercepting Ethio Telecom infrastructure. Even though the country’s telecom proclamation allows only Ethio Telecom to provide telecom services, individuals are illegally importing VSAT and SIM boxes to provide illegal telecom services in the country. Frehiwot said that in collaboration with law enforcement forces Ethio Telecom is tracing and taking legal actions on the illegal telecom operators. The illegal telecom operation is costing Ethio Telecom direly. International telecom companies complain that Ethio Telecom charges exorbitant rates for incoming international calls adding that they prefer to use the illegal telecom operators.
