30 million-year-old turtle found in church limestone

Photo: Geoff Sloan ​Paul Deans was sifting through some limestone he was given from the earthquake-destroyed Oxford Terrace Baptist Church when he made a prehistoric discovery. It turned out to be what Canterbury Museum believes is a piece of shell from an eochelone turtle, which existed 30 million years ago. The turtle fossil is already on display at Canterbury Museum. The turtle piece will be on display once Canterbury Museum’s $195 million redevelopment is completed, he said.
