30-million-year-old tiny 'mold pigs' seen by scientists

Fossils preserved in amber have revealed a new type of microinvertebrate that lived on Earth 30 million years ago. The findings by George Poinar Jr. of Oregon State University's College of Science provide a rare glimpse of this unique invertebrate. Poinar calls the animals "mold pigs" because of their resemblance to swine and their diet. “And occasionally, as in the present case, a fragment of the original habitat from millions of years ago is preserved too. “No claws are present at the end of their legs as they are with tardigrades and mites,” Poinar explained.
