ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Soldiers killed three suspected drug traffickers in an encounter at the border of Datu Paglas and Pandag towns in Maguindanao after dawn Thursday. Although outnumbered, Cabunoc and his men returned fire, killing three henchmen of Pendaliday, also known as “Grasscutter,” in the ensuing encounter. Army snipers eventually shot dead two relatives of Pendaliday, Samir and Rakim, also both surnamed Pendaliday, amid the 45-minute exchange of gunfire. Another follower of Pendaliday, Nasrudin Saligan, was also killed while trading shots with soldiers and policemen. Barangay residents told investigators Pendaliday managed to escape while his men fought the approaching soldiers and policemen.
