Shia LaBeouf reminds us his early claim to stardom as Jake, the hot seller of an itinerate crew of magazine peddlers. And while this very male picture nearly suffers from testosterone overdose, Michelle Williams’ role as Chandler’s ex-wife is just as memorable. Top-notch actors — Léa Seydoux, Vincent Cassel and Marion Cotillard among them — are in each other’s faces, as the film is in ours. It’s even more intense than 12 Years a Slave, with brutal images that are harder to watch, but it’s a must-see regardless. I, Daniel Blake: Britain’s Ken Loach took the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2016 with this drama of little guys vs. the evil Orwellian state.
