SIBU: A pre-dawn fire has left 222 people with only the clothes on their backs when their 22-door Rumah Dingon Megong longhouse in Sekuau Settlement Scheme at KM45 of Jalan Oya-Sibu was razed to the ground. “Upon reaching the location, the one-storey long house located more than 50km from Sibu was totally engulfed in flames,” he said when contacted. Tiong added that no one was injured in the incident and the cause of the fire was still being investigated. There were 222 people residing at the longhouse with 78 of them were children and all of the victims had sought shelter at the nearest community hall, he said. Bernama reported that the fire was believed to have started from the kitchen area of one of the longhouse units and the blaze was put out at 6.45am.
