2019 floods should have been a clear warning to govt, says climate expert on KZN floods

An expert in climatology says the 2019 floods in KwaZulu-Natal should have been a clear warning to the government of the vulnerability of communities to heavy mudslides and floods. The lead author of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Report Six, Professor Francois Engelbrecht, who is also the director and professor of Climatology for Global Change Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand, said the previous floods were indicative of how exposed KZN was to the elements. "The 2019 event should have been a clear warning to provincial and national government about how vulnerable communities in the province are to flashfloods and mudslides," he added on Thursday evening.
