PARIS — Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, and Naomi Osaka, the No. 1 women’s seed, were beaten in the third round of the French Open on Saturday. Sofia Kenin’s 6-2, 7-5 win over Williams and Katerina Siniakova’s 6-4, 6-2 victory over Osaka underscored the wide-open nature of women’s tennis. Of the 32 seeds in Paris, 23 have been eliminated or have withdrawn before the fourth round. The 10th-seeded Williams, a three-time French Open champion, had not lost this early in a Grand Slam tournament since Wimbledon in 2014.
