After all, these chefs are big culinary stars. And yet, 2017 will be remembered as the year when kings of the kitchen lost their power. They not only lost the authority to dominate their kitchens, but they found out how little they mattered when restaurants' images came into play. Investors, who only recently were willing to give high-profile chefs blank checks to do whatever they wanted, decided they'd had enough. Meanwhile, an entire new category of restaurants emerged where chefs play no role -- in fact, there aren't even restaurants at all, but customers are still being served.
