Gulfstream owner and Pegasus founder Frank Stronach's Shaman Ghost, going off at 19/1, placed almost as commandingly as Arrogate won – the horse looked positively hungry to run Arrogate down and will remain a horse to watch. Arrogate paid $3.80 to win, Shaman Ghost paid $8.60 to place and Neolithic paid $6 to show. For his part in the drama, California Chrome broke nobly and seemed unfortunately wide, but in fair enough position at the dread first turn. Chrome faded at the top of the backstretch rather spectacularly, he "spat the bit" as the horsemen say, while Arrogate dug in and brought home the money. Smith, in fact, said that he had been expecting Chrome to bring a furious run rounding out of the backstretch.
