Toledo’s first ocean-going ship of the 2018 Great Lakes season arrived at the local port Tuesday morning to deliver a cargo of pig iron. The Rideau will spend several days unloading the pig iron and then sail upriver to The Andersons to load corn bound for North Africa, Mr. Cappel said. The port authority in the past has held welcoming ceremonies for the first overseas ships, or salties, to arrive at the local port each shipping season, but has not done so in recent years. The St. Lawrence Seaway had opened for the season Thursday, and the Federal Rideau was one of the first ships through. Several Great Lakes vessels had called in Toledo this season before its arrival.
