Earlier this week, Kim Janey, the first woman and Black person to lead the city of Boston, became acting mayor. She was sworn in by the first Black woman to lead Massachusetts’ highest court, Kimberly Budd, and the first Black Massachusetts congresswoman, Ayanna Pressley. As council president, Janey was next in line, with the title of acting mayor bestowed by the city’s charter. Janey went back to that school on her first day as acting mayor, stopping by a classroom of students learning about desegregation.
