Everton opted against making any signings during the January transfer window but, unlike several of their Premier League rivals, there were relatively few complaints from supporters. The Blues are on their fifth manager since David Moyes left the club in 2016 and the squad is a bloated mishmash of underperforming players on top dollar. Director of Football Marcel Brands has made it clear that his ideal squad would consist of 23 players including three goalkeepers, eight defenders, six midfielders and six forwards. “Why a squad of 23? We think that’s enough to have a good squad to compete and also gives an opportunity for those in our academy,” he said at Everton’s recent Annual General Meeting.
