13 killed as jeepney falls off ravine in Kalinga


TABUK CITY, Kalinga — Thirteen passengers, most of them senior citizens, were killed when the jeepney they were riding on had brake failure and fell into a 200-meter ravine in Barangay Dao-angan at Balbalan town in Kalinga on Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 11). The 2:20 p.m. accident killed Willy Gamongan, Benjamin Badong, Isabel Bagne, Victorio Banglayan, Rosario Badong, Soledad Dammay, Agida Palangdao, Lolita Latawan, Elisa Dangawan, Loeta Maday, Angelita Benito, Teresa Dulansi and Annie Palicas. The jeepney was traveling through a rough road when the driver lost control as his vehicle lost its brakes downhill, said SPO4 Ruff Manganip, Kalinga police assistant public information officer. Police were still confirming reports that two other passengers who were brought to a hospital had also died. Balbalan is a remote third-class town in Kalinga with 12,195 residents, according to the 2015 census.
