120,000 federal government workers poised to strike

One of Canada’s largest national labour unions has threatened to strike following nationwide votes by more than 120,000 federal government workers, who are pushing for wage increases and the ability to work remotely, among other demands. It wasn’t immediately clear what percentage of members voted to strike. PSAC national president Chris Aylward said the workers are now in a legal strike position, meaning they could have walked out as early as today. Of the 155,000 workers, roughly 120,000 — or about one third of all federal public service workers — will be eligible to walk off the job, Aylward said. Those not eligible to strike include firefighters and Coast Guard workers, as well as those involved in national security and income distribution programs.
