12 killed during panchayat polls in West Bengal

KOLKATA: The Karnataka polls may have been incidentfree, but the atmosphere was far from peaceful in West Bengal where large scale violence marred the panchayat polls. There had been some incidents of violence. The number of deaths and incidents of violence were much lower than earlier years. We had reports of 12 deaths coming from districts; however, only six of them were related to poll violence. There is an effort to confuse people on the number of deaths,” said Surajit Kar Purkayastha, DG at Nabanna, state secretariat. Meanwhile, TMC’s national spokesperson Derek O’Brien tweeted that Bengal had witnessed 400 people being killed in the 1990s under the CPM rule.
