100,000 units to halve housing shortage in Nairobi

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero says the county has a housing crisis presented by lack of access to low-cost, affordable and adequate housing for most urban residents. “Target for housing development in Nairobi is 150,000 to 200,000 units annually, yet only about 3,000 development plans are approved annually, and only about 15,000 units developed annually,” he says. “Nairobi county has 17,000 social rental housing units occupied by residents at rents far below the market value,” Kidero says. At the New Ngara estate, the county wants to put up high density units owing to its proximity to the CBD. It is too high, but we can’t verify because they have not given us the documents,” Old Ngara Welfare Association official Martin Njoroge said.
