- Advertisement -An internal investigation by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) found that medical staff with Border Patrol failed to review the medical file of an 8-year-old migrant girl who died in U.S. custody on May 17. Despite the girl’s condition and her mother’s concerns, medical personnel did not transfer her to a hospital for higher-level care. On May 17, the day Alvarez died, the investigation found she was seen by a nurse practitioner on four occasions for a stomachache, nausea, and difficulty breathing. The CBP’s failure to adequately address the child’s medical condition and transfer her to a hospital for higher-level care has been criticized by medical professionals and immigration advocates alike. The lack of proper medical care and attention for individuals with pre-existing conditions or illnesses is unacceptable and must be addressed.
