The Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack goofed in its edition of 1927, a rare blemish for a compendium that was first published in London in 1864 and that, this year, marks its 157th annual volume. No one doubts that it is the oldest continuous sports reference book in history. The errant 1927 edition of the almanack—always spelled with a terminal “k”—made reference to a “Mr. Beckett,” who played for Dublin University in two cricket matches. Beckett had, in fact, been christened “Samuel Barclay” (S.B., not S.V.).
