“We were asked to stay in the classrooms,” said Preetham S., a sixth standard student. When army officials headed to their school around 2.30 p.m. to recover ‘encroached’ land, children and teachers locked themselves in classrooms. For at least three hours, teachers and students did not leave the premisesWhile parents and teachers argued with army officers, inside classrooms students looked towards their teachers and asked: “Can we leave now?”Nearly 1,800 students were caught in the intense confrontation, arguments, pleas and compromise between parents, teachers and the army. Heated arguments ensued between the parents and army officials as well as among the parents themselves as some wanted to pull their children out and head home.
