When advisers showed up the next morning to what they thought would be the task of helping Northam resign, the near-sleepless governor had a surprise. He wanted to fight, clear his name and avoid becoming the first Virginia governor to resign since the Civil War. “We amplify our call for the Governor to resign,” Virginia’s Legislative Black Caucus said in a statement Saturday after his turnabout. Never a natural politician, Northam, a pediatric neurologist, built his public career on the idea that he was honest. Aides and advisers went home that night thinking that Northam would have no choice but to step down the next day.
