‘This is one little pond and yet there’s thousands in there’: Okotoks mass poisons illegally dumped goldfish

Thousands of the aquarium fish are being scooped out of an Okotoks, Alta., storm water pond this week in an effort to rid the town of the illegally dumped species. It probably all started from just a few fish,” said Okotoks parks manager Christa Michailuck. There are reports of them in urban storm water ponds from Fort McMurray to Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. A 132-pound person would have to consume more than 150,000 litres of rotenone treated water within a 24-hour period to receive a lethal dose. Birds and mammals that eat dead fish and drink treated water will not be affected.
