Crash investigators blamed the accidents, which took 346 lives, in large part on a faulty flight-control system designed by Boeing—not production problems. Soon thereafter, the FAA launched a probe of Boeing’s factory quality and tightened its oversight by revoking the company’s ability to perform final safety checks on newly produced airplanes on regulators’ behalf.
