The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has urged the public to cooperate with the government’s four-day “Metro Manila Shake Drill” that began on July 14. Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said that learning how to act during drills could save lives as he joined the drill at the headquarters of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority. The four-day earthquake preparedness drill focuses on the testing of rescue and recovery capacity as well as the government’s command-and-control system. Solidum proposed that regular preparedness drills must be conducted in villages in Metro Manila to enhance the preparedness of residents for an earthquake. According to Phivolcs, the Philippines is located on various fault systems that may trigger earthquakes any moment.
