MPP wants to prevent couples from being split up in long-term care, Jan. 2I read with interest your story about the condition of spousal reunification in long-term care facilities in Ontario. My 97-year-old mother is among the ranks of the elderly who are separated from their spouses who are residing in long-term-care facilities. I have communicated with government agencies and managers about this situation and have come to realize that the term “spousal reunification” caresses an empty promise in a system that is inadequate to meet the needs of today’s aging population. Their last days together will be spent in a mental haze of confusion, and separated by a system that has failed them. I can only cringe at the thought of what anguish my wife and I will have to suffer when it is time for us to require long-term care, as well as others of our generation, who are legion in number.
