Mamoudou Gassama, 22, risked his life to rescue the four-year-old, who was clinging by his fingertips to the railing in northern Paris on Saturday. Mr Gassama, an illegal immigrant who arrived in France in September, was praised by Anne Hidalgo, the city mayor, who promised to help him to obtain a visa. He said that he was preparing to watch the Champions League final with friends in a restaurant when he heard “a lot of people shouting and cars honking.
