Named the Thomas Fire, the larger blaze began in a canyon near Santa Paula, about 65 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. “The prospects for containment are not good,” Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said a news briefing overnight. Jerry Brown (D) declared a state of emergency in Ventura County. Firefighters were also responding Tuesday to a brush fire in Los Angeles County. A spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department said on Twitter that the three-alarm blaze had prompted mandatory evacuations.
