The Paravans’ epic medical journey began at Charleston Lake during a late summer camping trip in 2012 when the family’s youngest member, five-year-old Matthew, had his first seizure. In December, a test found abnormal electrical activity in Matthew’s brain, and an MRI revealed he had a small brain lesion. Paravan took Matthew to the family doctor, who referred them to CHEO for another MRI. “Our lives changed on that day,” Paravan said. On a good day, Matthew has between 30 and 50 seizures, but is still able to go to school.
