LIDO BEACH — The Bess family, prepared for the fact that Hurricane Irma might demolish their house, decided the best course of action was to head for the beach. “Our house is going to be destroyed, but whatever,” 16-year-old Alana said almost cheerfully. Mike Bess, father to Alana, Ashley, 14, and Troy, 10, was a little more circumspect. Bess, a Realtor, decided not to try to hurricane-proof his house because it might not help. “We are going to stay at a local church.” The church is a sturdy building out of a flood zone.
