When Moka Dawkins, a Black and Indigenous trans woman, was arrested Thursday and held overnight by Toronto police, dozens of community members followed and demanded her release. “Just know that I’m just an individual in all of this,” Dawkins said to the crowd of supporters outside 55 Division. Where Dawkins is concerned, the situation is made all the more complicated by the fact that she is a Black trans woman who has been imprisoned before. She wound up staying the whole night and travelled from 14 Division to 55 Division when Dawkins was moved.
