‘Never heard of it before’: Antarctic penguin waddles onto Canterbury beach

After a 3000-kilometre journey, a small adélie penguin unexpectedly waddled onto the shores of Birdlings Flat, Canterbury, on November 10. The young adult adélie penguin, a species native to the coastline of Antarctica, made landfall at Canterbury's Birdlings Flat Beach on Wednesday night. A corpse was found in Marlborough in 1962 and a live adélie penguin was reportedly found in Kaikōura in 1993.
