Weta Workshop, the Oscar-winning special effects company behind movie blockbusters such as The Lord of the Rings, Blade Runner 2049 and Avatar, is expanding into the world of gaming. The New Zealand company has teamed up with Florida-based based augmented-reality startup Magic Leap for with the newly-launched Weta Gameshop, which aims at releasing so-called "mixed-reality experiences." The Weta Gameshop in Wellington, officially opened on Monday by New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, is thought to be the world's first specialist mixed-reality development studio. "Their ground-breaking partnership with Magic Leap is another feather in the cap for Weta Workshop, whose creativity crosses so many different fields," Ardern said. The mixed-reality game will be released later this year.
