Ontario’s chief coroner has announced an inquest into the 2016 death of Soleiman Faqiri, a mentally ill man in crisis who died after he was beaten, restrained and pepper-sprayed by correctional officers inside an Ontario jail. “It’s a long time coming,” Yusuf Faqiri, Soleiman’s older brother, told the Star on Thursday night. I want his story to be heard.”Since Soleiman died while in custody at the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay, an inquest is mandatory. In the nearly seven years since Soleiman’s death, the three police investigations — one by the Kawartha Lakes Police Service and two by the Ontario Provincial Police — found no grounds to lay charges. According to the Kawartha Lakes report, Soleiman was later left alone handcuffed in his cell.
