‘La La Land’ Comes Up Roses in Valentine’s Day Release

But “La La Land” grossed more than the combined box office of two Chinese romance titles that also opened Tuesday. The debut of “La La Land” also topped the nearly $10 million box-office total collected by “Les Misérables” in 2013, the last major Hollywood musical to hit China. “La La Land” also collected a record 14 nominations for the Academy Awards on Feb. 27. Nearly 63% of audiences of “La La Land” were women, it said, and 42% were between 20 and 24 years old.
