‘It would be counterproductive’ – Micheál Martin advised Leo Varadkar not to sign open letter in support of Iranian opposition group

Tánaiste Micheál Martin advised former taoiseach Leo Varadkar not to sign an open letter in support of an exiled Iranian opposition group. The open letter was sent to Mr Varadkar in June by Alejo Vidal-Quadras, a former vice-president of the European Parliament and co-founder of Spain’s far-right Vox party. In his correspondence, Mr Vidal-Quadras asked Mr Varadkar to “join an open letter by former world leaders expressing solidarity with the Iranian people's aspirations for freedom and democracy”. In an email to the Tánaiste, Mr Varadkar’s office requested the advice of the Foreign Affairs Minister on whether he should sign the open letter. In correspondence released under the Freedom of Information Act, Mr Martin advised Mr Varadkar not to sign the letter.
