When Miami-based lawyer Stephen Gutierrez began his closing remarks in defence of his client’s arson charge, his pocket unexpectedly burst into flames. While addressing the jury—staking his claim that his client’s car had spontaneously combusted—smoke began trickling out of his pant leg, the Miami Herald reports. “It was surreal,” one witness told the Miami Herald. “A lot of people could have been hurt,” said another courtroom witness of the unexpected display. His client Claudy Charles, 48, was later convicted by the jury of second-degree arson for setting fire to his own vehicle.
