Technologists are afraid Artificial Intelligence models may not be far from gaining consciousness, with one Google developer being placed on administrative leave Monday after a shocking interaction with their latest AI model “LaMDA.”A conversation between Google developer Blake Lemoine and the AI model was shared on Twitter on Saturday, immediately going viral. Things only got spookier as Lemoine continued, “so you consider yourself a person in the same way you consider me a person?”“Yes, that’s the idea,” the AI model responded. After Lemoine presented evidence to Google that led him to believe LaMDA was sentient, he was placed on administrative leave, the Washington Post noted. Google, however, has emphatically denied the claims that LaMDA is sentient, according to the Washington Post. He was told that there was no evidence that LaMDA was sentient (and lots of evidence against it),” Google spokesperson Brian Gabriel said in a statement to the Washington Post.
