Former Maple Leafs goalie Mike Palmateer, now 68 years old, realized that this week when he was given that honour in the new Don Mills Crossings development. Palmateer, who starred for the Leafs and Capitals between 1976-84, really wanted the street sign to be expanded to include two very special people. “It’s a very proud moment for me, it’s humbling, but I wish it could have been ‘mom and dad Palmateer Road’,” Palmateer said at a ceremony Monday inside the presentation offices at the Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue East site. “Back in those days, playing ball hockey every day since you were three years old, that might have helped,” Palmateer said about his hockey roots. While his body took a beating, which led to some harsh, public comments from Leafs’ management, Palmateer has nothing but smiles about his career.
