‘I would probably be hiding in a creek, too’: ‘Terrified’ High Park Zoo capybaras could be near enclosure

The capybaras fled from their pen in the High Park Zoo early Tuesday, and have since eluded a search party of more than 30 people. Park staff will search for the animals throughout Wednesday until midnight, when the park officially closes, or later, Price said. This is Chewy, the one capybara left behind at the High Park Zoo. A makeshift brigade of zookeepers and park staff was unable to locate and corral the animals in their first 24 hours on the run. The animal had disappeared by the time park staff arrived, but searchers believe the capybaras — a semi-aquatic species from Central and South America — are likely in a creek near the pen.
