‘Good, frank theatre about sex, erotic without being exploitative’: Stratford’s Bunny offers something rare

“Show, don’t tell” is one of the cardinal rules of playwriting, and like most rules it can be broken. The result is an often scintillating piece that only slackens when, perversely, it doesn’t tell us enough. It’s also a form-fitting style for Maev Beaty, who gave her first great performance in a lesser-known Moscovitch play USSR (which really was a monologue) and for whom this new one may well have been written. The writing, the acting, and Sarah Garton Stanley’s direction together offer something rare: good, frank theatre about sex, erotic without being exploitative. Nonetheless, what seems meant to be the point is blunted, because the play won’t show and Sorrel/Bunny won’t tell.
