If you were so inclined, you could have spent the past year reading nothing but books and articles purporting to explain the polarization and rancor now marring American politics. It’s an important subject, although a cynical observer might reasonably wonder whether polarization would be such a hot topic if a few Midwestern states had plumped for Hillary Clinton rather than Donald Trump in 2016. In that case, we’d likely be reading less about polarization and more about the emerging left-liberal consensus and the hegemony of progressivism.
