In the dry language of research, longitudinal studies involve gathering data on a given subject over a long period of time. “Father Soldier Son,” streaming on Netflix, certainly qualifies in the longitude department, though it’s anything but dry. This documentary by Leslye Davis and Catrin Einhorn covers almost a decade in the lives of its subjects, a former platoon sergeant, grievously wounded in Afghanistan, and his two young sons. It’s research of a profoundly affecting kind—a study of love and devotion, and the toll taken by machine-gun bullets on a body, a gallant spirit and a family.
