LAS VEGAS—The only good thing about the Maple Leafs’ 3-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday night was that they didn’t lose John Tavares as well. The play went on, back to the Leafs end, as Tavares writhed in pain in front of Vegas goalie Logan Thompson. The Matthews line spent a minute in the Vegas end on one shift. But the Leafs perked up toward the end of the period again and Nylander got the tying goal, fed by Tavares. It was Tavares’s hard work along the boards at the Golden Knights’ blue-line that earned him the puck.
