‘CHINA VS. USA’ – CAN CHINA CREATE HISTORY IN TOKYO 2020? * Tokyo 2020 is officially the 32nd Summer Olympics* But in fact it is the 29th Summer Olympics as no Games was held for three times; in 1916 (due to World War I), and 1940 and 1944 (both times due to World War II)* The winner of the Olympics is traditionally decided by the number of gold medals won by each participating country* In some instances, though, the winner is decided by the total number of medals won; or the tally of gold, silver, and bronze medals won by each country* According to the formal ‘gold-medal-tally’, USA had been the leading country of 17 Summer Olympics out of the 28 completed so far* It was only on 11 times that any other country had won a Summer Olympics* The countries that have won the Summer Olympics other than USA are: In 1900 (won by France), 1908 (Great Britain), 1936 (Germany), 1956, 1960, 1972, 1976, 1980, and 1988 (all those six years by the Soviet Union or USSR), 1992 (won by 15 former Soviet republics who participated under the name ‘Unified Team’), and 2008 (China)* If China can end up winning the most number of gold medals in Tokyo this time, it will be the first country, other than USA or Soviet Union, to win a Summer Olympics more than once
