DARTMOUTH – A group of Azorean and UMass Dartmouth nursing students are getting some valuable lessons about culture, diversity, and healthcare roles from a global perspective by learning about healthcare on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Twelve students from the University of the Azores, along with three professors, were in the Southcoast from April 18 to 26 as part of ‘Bridging the Atlantic,’ a nursing exchange program between UMass Dartmouth and the University of the Azores. During the exchange, students from both universities worked collaboratively on a community health project addressing food insecurity in the U.S. and Portugal. Dr. Mary Ellen Brisbois, who coordinates the “Bridging the Atlantic” program at UMass Dartmouth, stressed the importance of nursing students and faculty understanding different cultures and being aware of issues and challenges faced in both countries. Before Covid, Brisbois and a group of UMass Dartmouth students did a presentation on the Bridging the Atlantic work at the Network Toward Unity For Health conference in Limerick, Ireland.
