‘Blonde’ and ‘Endless’ by Frank Ocean Review: A Stream of Self Revelation

Ocean sings over appealingly assembled phased electric guitars and pianos, glitchy percussion, organ swells and washes of wavy synthetic industrial noise. In “Futura Free,” loops, grinding noise and a repeating piano riff build in intensity under Mr. Ocean’s rap, but soon he is singing to piano chords. Electric guitar is the primary support in the moving, Elliott Smith-inspired “Seigfried” until it is joined by synthesized boops and bass tones. Ocean sings and Kendrick Lamar raps over echoing hand drums, electric guitars, synth strings until a new shape-shifting effect takes over. The musical approach on “Endless” serves well Mr. Ocean’s lyrical themes of loneliness and alienation.
