ODSP rates have become a provincial election issue, with advocates calling for increased funding to the program and less stringent measures to get people accepted. And considering the last ODSP increase came in 2018 — before the pandemic and the highest interest rate since 1991 — some say the promises leaders are making are tardy. Mike Schreiner, the Green Party’s leader, said he’ll double both ODSP and Ontario Works benefits if elected. The collective proposed a $2,000 rate for Ontario Works and ODSP clients to mitigate the effects of the “unfair rules” that keep clients in poverty. “The whole program needs to be revamped right now,” he told the Star.
