more-inReleasing a research study on the prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in India, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said the government needs to step in and ban the practice as FGM/C is not a communal issue but a human rights issue. “Women’s right to dignity supersedes right to freedom of religion. Law cannot and should not question the idea of divine but law can and must regulate human action that hurts others,” said Mr. Tharoor. We reiterate that there is no place for any kind of mutilation in the Dawoodi Bohra religion and culture. The Dawoodi Bohra community is strongly against FGM or any practice or act that demeans, oppresses or subjugates women.
