If you’ve followed his career at all closely, you’ll know that Mr. Lane is no mere musical-comedy clown. Unlike his predecessors, Mr. Lane plays this scene not with explosive ferocity ( Ron Leibman ) or cold-eyed control ( Al Pacino ) but with an unexpected undertone: fear.
