The ranchers now are mounting a long-shot bid to persuade lawmakers to write labeling requirements into legislation to implement Trump’s North American trade deal with Canada and Mexico. Bullard said that a plunge in cattle prices that occurred around the same time demonstrates that the end of labeling hurt ranchers. Each year since 1980, an average of almost 17,000 cattle ranchers have gone out of business, according to a recent study by the Open Markets Institute, an anti-monopoly group. The Wishons think Trump’s North American trade deal could still be improved.
